How to rent a parking space from a private owner
Updated on 3 October 2026 · 3 min read
Renting a parking space from a private owner means booking, in advance, a spot close to where you are going: a garage, a driveway, a courtyard or a corner of a garden. Here is how to do it, and what to check so that everything goes smoothly.
Why choose a space from a private owner?
In a city or a tourist area, finding a space on the day can be slow and stressful. A space from a private owner is booked in advance, for as long as you need it: by the hour, day, week or month.
It is also a solution for vehicles that do not fit well in standard car parks: motorhomes, vans, motorbikes or bicycles. Each listing states the accepted vehicles and the available dimensions.
What to check before booking
- The dimensions: length, width and above all height. A gate, an archway or a garage ceiling can be limiting.
- The accepted vehicle type: car, motorhome, caravan, truck, motorbike or bicycle.
- Access: manual or motorised gate, keypad, key box. The listing also shows an ease-of-access level, from "For experienced drivers" to "Very easy".
- Protection: covered space or closed garage, camera, alarm, lighting.
- Equipment: charging station, power outlet and, for motorhomes, a water point and waste disposal.
- Hours: some spaces are only available at certain times or are unavailable while the owner is away. The listing's calendar shows this.
- Reviews from previous renters, when there are any.
Booking on ParkForCar, step by step
- Search by city, enter your dates and your vehicle type. You can also tick the equipment you want (charging station, power outlet, water point...).
- Open the listings that interest you: photos, prices, height, features, location on the map and reviews.
- Choose your dates in the calendar, enter your vehicle's licence plate, then pay securely online.
- Once the booking is made, the access information (code, key box...) appears on the listing and in your account.
- Park, then leave the space at the agreed time: you get an email reminder before the end, and you can extend your booking as long as the space is not booked right after. When you leave, report it from your account. You also get an email before the start, reminding you where to find the access details and what to do if the space is occupied.
Parking at a private owner's space
The renter commits to leaving the space at the end time given when booking, so as not to inconvenience the next person. Also follow the listing's instructions: access, exact location, residents' rules if there are any.
If the space is occupied when you arrive, click “The space is occupied” in your account (available 15 minutes after your booking starts): the previous renter and the owner are notified, and you see the expected vehicle to tell a delay from an intruder. For any other problem, use “Report a problem”. After your stay you can leave a review, which helps future renters. A renter who repeatedly stays on a space without reporting their departure gets a warning, and their new bookings can then be suspended.
What if no space is available?
If no listing matches your search, leave your email address: you are notified as soon as a space appears in that city. The closest spaces are also suggested, with the distance shown.
